Title: IH7!JT
Year: 2018
Artist: Amy Redmond
Size: 8 x 10 inches
This editioned print is a departure from the controlled, planned methodical manner in which I typically work, and came about from a challenge posed by a fellow artist to create an edition in 90 minutes or less.
After several unsuccessful sketches for ideas and under the pressure of time, I ditched the sketchbook, grabbed the largest wood type I had, and inked up the press. With the clock running, the print spontaneously came to life as each pass came off the press — an exercise in the catharsis of being fully present in the moment. The result is a visual conversation between the artist and her tools, and inspired another iterative series of prints.
This print is composed of metal and wood types, set by hand one character at a time, and overprinted in several layers. The type characters used are: I H 7 ! J T
