Project: Season 14 Bout Poster (November 2017)

Client: Minnesota RollerGirls

Role: Designer + Art Director

When fellow letterpress printer and roller derby skater Mugsy Marauder offered me the chance to design the marketing materials for the Minnesota RollerGirls first official bout of Season 14, I couldn’t say no — it’s been way too long since I’ve designed for roller derby.

The poster is designed to look like a mid-century record album cover, using real records that I inked and pulled prints from by hand. Once dry, I scanned them into the computer and composed the remainder of the design digitally. The original solution was in full color, but when silkscreen was presented as an option, I shifted gears into a 2-color design.

Those of you in Minnesota who are able to attend the bout on November 11, 2017 have the chance to win a t-shirt with this design and pick up a limited edition silkscreen poster (shown above). Fifty are available for sale, signed by yours truly.

The Minnesota RollerGirls are founding members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the preeminent governing body for female, skater-owned, flat-track roller derby leagues. All participants are unpaid amateurs and the league provides insurance coverage for practices and bouts.
